KOTA KINABALU, 22 September 2026 – The Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FKI), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), continues to strengthen its strategic partnership with industry partner GAC Shipping Malaysia through an educational visit involving 25 pupils from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Matanggung, Beluran, Sabah.
The delegation was led by Mr Herman Jorgensen, Managing Director of GAC Shipping Malaysia, together with the Headmaster of SK Matanggung, Mr Mohd Azrie, and accompanied by the school's teachers. The delegation was received by the Dean of FKI, PM Dr Mohd Hanafi Ahmad Hijazi, and the Head of Administration of FKI, Ms Molly Donna Awang Sham.
The visit aimed to expose pupils to the fields of science, technology and innovation through hands-on learning experiences at UMS. The itinerary included the National Science Day Exhibition at the UMS Main Lecture Hall (DKP Utama), the Aquarium at the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), Borneosis at the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC), and the U-Science Centre at the UMS Library.
The visit also served as a platform to strengthen the strategic partnership between FKI UMS and GAC Shipping Malaysia, with both parties agreeing to extend their existing collaboration through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) by the Dean of FKI, PM Dr Mohd Hanafi Ahmad Hijazi, and Mr Herman Jorgensen.
As a continuation of this partnership, UMS and GAC Shipping Malaysia have expressed their intention to further their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives with SK Matanggung in 2027. Planned initiatives include the provision of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and the delivery of training related to the Internet of Things (IoT), aimed at enhancing pupils' exposure to and digital skills.
This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of FKI UMS and GAC Shipping Malaysia to expanding access to digital education, particularly among school communities in rural areas. Through strategic collaboration between the university, industry and schools, the initiative is expected to nurture pupils' interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), while opening up opportunities for the younger generation to explore future career pathways in technology.
